GU68 Engineers Trust

Frequently-Asked Questions

What is the GU68 Engineers Trust?

The Trust was established in 2004 by a group of the 1968 Engineering Graduates following their 35th anniversary dinner, held in the University. It has between three and six Trustees, all of whom must be Engineering graduates of the University, with the numbers specified to ensure that no one discipline is dominant. The stated aims of the Trust are the advancement of education, in particular for students studying engineering at the University of Glasgow, by the provision of bursaries for students and sponsorship of final year projects.

The Trust is a Scottish Charity, registered with OSCR (the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator).

Who can apply to the Trust?

Any undergraduate or graduate student in Engineering at the University of Glasgow may apply for an Award. Only current undergraduate or graduate students in Engineering at the University of Glasgow may apply. Applicants studying at other institutions or studying other subjects cannot be considered.

What kind of purposes can Awards be granted for?

Past Awards have been made to assist in funding specific costs connected with projects forming part of the student's course, providing either funding for travel, equipment or materials required in connection with the project, or living expenses associated with living away from their usual residence.

The Trust is not intended to be a general hardship fund, as other sources of such funding are already available.

A successful application will normally be expected to demonstrate a contribution to practice or research in one of the branches of engineering.

What size of Award can I apply for?

The Trust will consider applications for any sum, but it currently aims to provide a contribution to the short-term needs of a project being carried out by an individual student or a small group of students, rather than substantial programmes of research.

Awards will normally amount to a few hundred pounds.

The Trust may consider larger applications for projects considered to be of particular merit. If you feel you have such a project, please make an informal enquiry to the Trust before submitting a formal application.

How many Awards does the Trust make each year?

There is no limit to the number of Awards which may be made, but the Trust normally attempts to make at least two Awards per year. However, it also reserves the right to make no Award if sufficient applications of the required calibre are not received.

What if I miss the 31 January application deadline?

Because of the limited time available between receiving applications and making an Award, the Trust is unfortunately unable to consider applications received after the deadline. However, you can still make an application for consideration for the following year's Awards, as long as you will still be eligible and undertaking your studies at that time. Please note that after the deadline, no applications will be accepted until the application period opens again in November.

I am an Engineering graduate. How can I assist the work of the Trust?

The Trust obtains its funds from donations by graduates and from the Gift Aid scheme operated by H M Revenue and Customs. This allows the Trust to recover from the Revenue the tax already paid by donors on the money contributed, and potentially makes every £100 donated worth approximately an extra £28 to the Trust. Graduates can therefore help by making a donation and by enabling the Trust to recover tax through Gift Aid.

You can also help by becoming a Trustee. If you are interested in doing so, please contact the Honorary Secretary.

Although set up by the 1968 Graduates, donations and assistance from graduates of any year will be most welcome.
